Neuroscience, pirates and building effective training šŸ“ā€ā˜ ļø

Hi Reader

Iā€™m deep in preparations for next weekā€™s ā€˜Working in and around #MedCommsā€™ event at Heathrow. If youā€™re in the UK, it would be great to see you there! Sign up here, if you havenā€™t already.

All the places at my secret session during the Heathrow meeting have now been taken. Thank you to everyone who got in touch!

If you didnā€™t get a spot, come and find me during the rest of the day, either during the ā€˜Meet the Mentorsā€™ session at 2pm in Room 19 or in the exhibition hall.

But what about if you donā€™t live in the UK?

I get a lot of questions from people who are struggling to break into the industry. Sometimes they have a non-traditional background. Sometimes they live in places that donā€™t have any agencies. Sometimes they simply canā€™t find any opportunities that donā€™t require experience.

If this describes your situation, my latest video on the YouTube channel, 'How can I find my first MedComms job?' is for you! Itā€™s full of practical tips to help you find appropriate opportunities, and you can download the summary PDF here.

Iā€™ll also be talking to an international group of freelancers this Friday, when Iā€™ll be joining Lisa Baker who runs Freelancers in Pubs for a Zoom about how to take control of your freelance career to make it work for you. You can sign up to join the call here ā€“ Iā€™d love to see you there!

One of the considerations Iā€™ll be discussing during this call is creating time for learning and development as a freelancer. I know how hard this can be, but Iā€™m always trying to find ways to build my skills.

I was lucky enough to join an event with Lauren Waldman (AKA the Learning Pirate) last week, which was entertaining but also informative. If youā€™re keen to get the most from any training you do, I would highly recommend her course ā€˜Joining forces with your brainā€™ ā€“ neuroscience has never been so much fun.

Iā€™m also in the early stages of a course by Stellar Labs that focuses on designing training for effective learning transfer. After all, whatā€™s the point in doing training if the content doesnā€™t translate into new practical skills and behaviours? I'm looking forward to enhancing all the training I create with what I learn!

Have you done any great training recently? If so, I'd love to hear about it ā€“ what made it so good? What are you going to do with what you've learnt? How are you integrating it into your work?

And I'd also love to hear from you if you have any questions, whether they are about anything from this message or about MedComms in general. Simply hit reply to this email and I'll get back to you!

All the best

Eleanor

Hi Reader #MedComms day is nearly here! On Wednesday 12th June, we will celebrate all the quirks and wonder of working in MedComms. At 10:30 BST, I'll be taking a break with coffee and cake for the Great MedComms Workbook Bake Off. If you're a freelancer, why don't you join me? It shouldn't just be the agencies that have all the...

Hi Reader I am thrilled to announce that I am taking over the management of the MedComms Workbook service for freelancers in MedComms from its founder, Peter Llewellyn. Weā€™re working together closely during the transition, and both hope it will go from strength to strength. As part of this transition, weā€™ve launched a community on the Heartbeat platform for the Workbook subscribers. This online space is dedicated to fostering connections, sharing knowledge, and supporting freelancers. You can...

Hi Reader Had you heard of MedComms when you were 15? I certainly hadn't! I've had a request from a school in London asking for a work experience opportunity in the spring/summer for a Year 10 student who is keen to become a medical writer. If you work for an agency based in London that might be able to help, please let me know! If you're actually hoping to start your own MedComms career but are a little beyond Year 10 work experience, you might find the First MedComms Job event at the...
